What is the difference between natural and synthetic gemstones?

Natural gemstone

The term natural refers to a gemstone that is formed in nature without any contribution of human activity. These gemstones are most often mined from the earth and water and are quite unique compared to synthetic stones. Each piece is an original, which is reflected, for example, by the intensity of colour or inclusions. These specific characteristics are given to natural stones mainly by their mineral composition.

Synthetic gemstone

Although they are created in a laboratory, synthetic (or lab-grown) gemstones have the same physical properties and chemical composition as natural stones. Thus, they are not imitations, only their origin is different. Compared to natural stones, synthetic ones are more affordable and moreover better for the environment. There is no need for damaging underground mining and their trade is not connected to unethical business practices. They are therefore significantly more environmentally friendly and socially responsible.

Simulated gemstone

The third option are simulated stones, which are most often made of glass or plastic and are created to replicate natural colors and patterns. However, these stones differ in chemical composition and physical properties – such as the refraction of light and durability. They are therefore not a stone, just a substitute of it.

Although it is almost impossible to tell the difference between natural and synthetic stones with naked eye, some differences still exist. Synthetic stones do not have natural defects or color variations, they look absolutely perfect. The price also differs significantly – large natural stones are much more expensive than synthetic stones of the same size, substitutes are the cheaper option.
